The Carbon challenge is real. It’s now. And we’re up for it.

Making delicious, healthier snacks shouldn’t come at a cost to our planet. And climate change is one of the greatest threats. That’s why we’re committed to reaching Carbon Net Zero by 2030. Net Zero means taking every possible bit of carbon out of our snacks and offsetting the rest.Here’s how we’re going to do that…

Getting Carbon LIT

This is where our journey started. We worked with The Carbon Literacy Project to train every member of our team to be carbon literate…the 1st food company in the world to do this.

We’re now carbon experts. Educate then act.

Mapping our Carbon Footprint

We mapped our footprint, properly. This means mapping it across Scope 1, 2 and 3. What’s this scope chat about? It basically means that we measured our footprint end-to-end. Including everything from the carbon emitted from farming our ingredients, right down to the emissions from the light bulbs in the shops that sell our snacks. The whole lot.

On average, a bag of PROPERCORN or PROPERCHIPS weighs in at ~80-100 gCO2e per 30g bag. Not bad. But could be better. We’re on a mission to get this to zero.

Bringing down our Carbon

We know where we’re at. We understand what we need to do. So now’s the time for action. Below is the breakdown of our carbon footprint which will steer the choices we make, to get to Carbon Net Zero by 2030. Zero Carbon snacks aren’t really a thing, which is why we’ll be putting in the graft to hit a 50% carbon reduction before offsetting the rest (using solid credits, not the cheap stuff).

Our carbon footprint:

There’s a reason that we use plastic packaging. Whilst many think it’s the enemy (and from a pollution point of view, we don’t disagree), it’s the lowest carbon way of getting our delicious snacks to land in your hands, and taste as you’d want them to - banging.

Plastic pollution is a big issue. But Climate Change is a far bigger issue. That’s why our priority is to keep our snacks in the lowest carbon packaging. Whilst making sure that they stay tasty and fresh for as long as possible.

There’s always more to do. And it’s a journey that we’re on. The packaging we use for our popcorn bars is made from 30% recycled plastic…we’re working on the rest. And we’re looking to potentially roll this packaging out across all of our snacks. As well as continuing our hunt for new lower carbon materials. Know of one? Send it our way: snack@proper.co.uk.

We’re also signing up to a big initiative this year to tackle the plastic challenge and find a way to recycle packs like ours.

Mapping our Carbon Footprint

Climate change is happening right now, and it could irreversibly change our planet. The simplest way to slow rising global temperatures is to limit the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere.

What can you do about it? The same as us. Educate then act. Find out how much carbon you’re currently using. You can do this by mapping your carbon footprint here. It’ll tell you your total footprint, and then break it down for you.

Armed with that knowledge, you can then get to it. By either picking off the things that carry a big footprint. Or by focussing on the quick, smaller wins. Or both.

Ingredient Integrity

Delicious ingredients are at the heart of every PROPER snack. So growing and farming them sustainably is key. There is no fast-track solution here. And sustainably growing is a big commitment. But one that we’ve taken on. By 2024, all of our key ingredients will be responsibly sourced. And by 2030, all of them.

We’re off to a solid start here. We’re the only Sweet popcorn in the UK that uses Fairtrade sugar.

Palm oil is responsible for the clearance of a huge amount of the world’s tropical rainforests. This isn’t ok. Instead, we use Rapeseed, Sunflower and Shea oil. Making us the first, and only, palm-oil-free microwave popcorn in the UK.

We’re going after bigger and better in 2021, with our initiative “CORN grown properly”. Check back in to watch our progress. We’re on a mission to make sure that every kernel is proper.

Positive Impact

We’re not perfect, we’re a B Corp. And have been since 2018. In fact, we’re the first snack brand in the UK to be B Corp certified. This means that we try to do things properly - by the world, our team, our partners, and you.

Getting B Corp accredited is a big step, but our efforts don’t stop there. Business as a force for good is on-going. Day-to-day, people and planet play a part in every decision we make. Always opting for the best choice available to us.

We’re constantly striving for better. And pushing for a higher B Corp score every year is a brilliant way of keeping us in check.
